The Knight has a formal type of move like an English alphabet “L” an awkward move to any direction. It can moves two squares horizontally and one vertically or vice versa. For example place the Knight on d7 of the board it must move to b8, b6, c5, e5, f6 or f8.

The last character of chess is the Pawn which is moving in the simplest way as it can move only one square ahead in fact toward opponent. There is also another rule the pawn may move two squares forward if it is on its initial position. Here is trailer for you, place the white pawn on e3 (Pe3 or simply e3) it will normally move towards e4 and a black pawn on e3 (Pe3 or simply e3) may only move to e2; but a white pawn on d2 (Pd2 or simply d2) may move either to d3 or d4. However Pawns have less power than other characters on chess.

You can also categories the characters according to their ability to move in certain squares determines their units or value. The Queen has maximum flexibility of worth 9 units. Then the Rook is worth 5 units. The Bishop and the Knight both equal to 3 units, while a Pawn is only worth 1 unit. With these general ideas you can balance on the chess board.
